Effect of subnutrition on normalized muscle force and relaxation rate in human subjects using voluntary contractions.

چکیده
1. Muscle weakness and wasting are well-known consequences of subnutrition, but there have been no published comparisons of these variables in a single muscle or muscle group. We report voluntary force measurements of adductor pollicis muscle in 11 subnourished patients normalized for their cross-sectional areas. We also report normalized relaxation rates of these contractions and the results are compared with those obtained in 40 healthy normally nourished subjects. 2. Normalized muscle force was no different in the subnourished group. However, relaxation rate was significantly slower than in the control group.

β-Alanine supplementation enhances human skeletal muscle relaxation speed but not force production capacity.
β-Alanine (BA) supplementation improves human exercise performance. One possible explanation for this is an enhancement of muscle contractile properties, occurring via elevated intramuscular carnosine resulting in improved calcium sensitivity and handling. This study investigated the effect of BA supplementation on in vivo contractile properties and voluntary neuromuscular performance. Twenty-t...
متن کاملUse of motor cortex stimulation to measure simultaneously the changes in dynamic muscle properties and voluntary activation in human muscles.
Force responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation of motor cortex (TMS) during exercise provide information about voluntary activation and contractile properties of the muscle. Here, TMS-generated twitches and muscle relaxation during the TMS-evoked silent period were measured in fresh, heated, and fatigued muscle. Subjects performed isometric contractions of elbow flexors in two studies. To...

Loudness of verbal commands affect the Voluntary motor response. It seems the more intensity of verbal command, the more muscle contraction force. The purpose of thisstudy was to investigate the hypothesized effect of verbal command loundness onmagnitude of a resulting voluntary isometric contraction of triceps brachi muscle. Thirthy five female subjectsbetween ages of 18-30 performed f...

Introduction: In this study we compared transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) elicited motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in a postural (bilateral low back extension: BLBE) and a respiratory (forced expiration during breath holding: FEBH) task. Methods: Using TMS of the left motor cortex, simultaneous patterns of corticospinal facilitation of the contralateral erector spinae (ES) and rectus abdomi...
متن کاملVoluntary muscle activation, contractile properties, and fatigability in children with and without cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy (CP) may lead to profound weakness in affected portions of the extremities and trunk. Knowing the mechanisms underlying muscle weakness will help to better design interventions for increasing force production in children with CP. This study quantified voluntary muscle activation, contractile properties, and fatigability of the quadriceps femoris and triceps surae in children with...
